Cuba Calls in UN for Women's Access to Education

Cuba championed in the United Nations the women´s access to quality education as a key tool for their empowerment.

'With no education, it is not possible to move forward either to the economic empowerment of women nor to the construction of a full quality culture. Education is the basis on which women's progress in society is supported,' Cuban permanent representative, Anayansi Rodríguez stated.

Speaking at the continuation of debates at the 61st session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), the diplomat stressed the importance of acquiring knowledge and skills to gain access to the workforce and take up high-skill jobs.

On the other hand, education asserts from the beginning that equality is a human right and trains women for public practice. It is something essential for gaining access to decision-making positions, she said.

Rodríguez said women's economic empowerment should continue as CSW´s top priority. The meeting will continue here until March 24.

It is very important to strive for feasible choices that contribute to changing the reality in which millions of women continue to live on, particularly rural, Afro-descendant, indigenous and non-heterosexual sexual orientation ones.

The Cuban ambassador pointed out that after 22 years of the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and after two years of being established the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, global progress for women's empowerment and gender equity is still insufficient.
