HAVANA.- Cuba has a strong and organized civil society, with a presence in all spheres of the country, assured Fermín Quiñones Sánchez, president of the Cuban United Nations Association (ACNU).

In an exclusive interview with the Cuban News Agency (ACN), on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the ACNU, Quiñones Sánchez highlighted the challenges facing the association, including bringing more civil society organizations on board to join the 105 NGOs and other associations with which the ACNU works today.

The Cuban United Nations Association is a non-governmental, non-profit organization that groups, on a voluntary basis, natural and legal persons genuinely interested in learning about and participating in the work of the United Nations.

He explained that the association supports the independence and sovereignty of Cuba and the path taken for the economic development of the nation.

The ACNU has seen its membership increase because, although it was founded among the country's intelligentsia following the triumph of the Revolution, it has worked to incorporate prestigious associations and institutions within society, scientific and academic centers, which have come to complement the organization, its president emphasized.

One of the strengths of the ACNU, Quiñones Sánchez explained, is its work with the rest of civil society on issues of interest to the island, within the framework of the United Nations, including the denunciation of the unjust U.S. policy of economic, commercial and financial blockade against Cuba and its effects on the Cuban people.
