The Foreign Affairs Ministry yesterday reaffirmed its position that the US should drop all economic sanctions against Cuba.

In a meeting between Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn and Cuban ambassador to Cambodia Juan de Jesus Hidalgo-Gato Perez, Mr Sokhonn said the sanctions should be dropped following the UN resolution, according to ministry spokesman Chum Sounry.

“Mr Sokhonn said the stance of Cambodia is to continue to support UN resolution the ending of economic and financial sanctions from America on Cuba,” said Mr Sounry.

Mr Sokhonn discussed the recent commune elections with the Cuban ambassador, Mr Sounry said, adding that the minister also thanked the ambassador for ongoing scholarships for Cambodians to study in Cuba.

“Between 1983 and 2017, 162 Cambodian students studied in Cuba. Now there are 21 Cambodian students studying in Cuba in the medical technology sector,” Mr Sounry said.
