The 92.4% of Cuban schools will resume activities from this Monday on, after a week of continuous recovery efforts triggered by the destruction caused by hurricane Irma.

According to the information given by the First Deputy minister of Education, Cira Pineiro Alonso, 2,262 schools were affected, especially in the provinces of Camaguey, Havana, Villa Clara, Ciego de Avila, and Sancti Spiritus.

“Irma” resulted in nine total collapses of schools (Holguin, Sancti Spiritus, and Mayabeque). This situation will not be solved any time soon. Therefore, different solutions are being sought.

Other destruction remnants concentrated on light roofs, metal structural works, impermeable blankets, polluted tanks, and fallen trees which damaged the structure of schools.

Cira Pineiro also commented that a total of 119 schools relocated their registration; 537 of them will not start off due to the magnitude of the damages or their use as evacuation centers.

It also implied that all executives, professors, service workers were involved in and during the hurricane looking after more than 50,000 people housed in those evacuation centers.

She also noted that many workers, students and their families went to their schools to help in the recovery works as one of the main goals of the country is to resume educational activities as soon as possible.
