Cuban authorities and citizens ratified their solidarity with Puerto Rico today after the damages caused on that island of the Caribbean by Hurricane Maria.

Held at the headquarters of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with Peoples (ICAP), the event also recalled the 149 anniversary of Grito de Lares, a historic event on September 23, 1868, that marked the beginning of the Puerto Rican war of independence against Spain.

According to the president of ICAP and Hero of the Republic of Cuba, Fernando González, the Puerto Rican people can always count on the support of Cuba.

He also recalled that the activity of this day has been organized uninterruptedly since 1975.

According to Gonzalez, the same will continue to be done until it is necessary because in Cuba it is certain that one day Puerto Rican independence will finally come.

Then the act will have other characteristics, although it will always be based on feelings of solidarity, he said.

By its part, the head of the Mission of Puerto Rico in Havana, Edwin Gonzalez, thanked the Cubans for their constant support for the Puerto Rican people and for the independence cause, as well as the concern on this island for the Puerto Rican situation after the passage of Maria.
