Yasmany Simon, a member of the Committee for the Defense of the Revolution said these meetings were essential to the electoral process and the future of the country.

The Cuban people have organized open forums to discuss the proposals of the candidate ahead of the election on Nov. 26 for the People's Power Assembly seats.

Yasmany Simon, a member of the Committee for the Defense of the Revolution said these meetings were essential to the electoral process and the future of the country.

"We talk about the blockade, all the damage this policy has caused the country over 50 years, creating obstacles to our development despite the people's efforts," Simon said.

The leader is an electrical worker from the municipality of San Miguel del Padron and was part of the debate in zone 15 of the Havana municipality of 10 de Octubre.

"We talk about youth committed to the Cuban Revolution and showing the world who we are, what we have planned, and the road we have chosen," Simon added.

They discussed the role of youth, popular participation, protecting social advancements, and the importance of electing representatives. The meeting also included a tribute to the leader of the Cuban Revolution Fidel Castro ahead of the upcoming commemorations of the first-year anniversary of his death.

This week the electoral commission organized a trial run of the election as Cubans will choose representatives from over 27,000 candidates that will compete for 605 assembly seats.

University professor Luis Toledo Sande said people have the responsibility to make democracy in Cuba better, and collectively working towards change in society.

"Democracy must be built every day," he said, "with each person doing their part and asserting our rights, continuing the work Fidel began."
