Cuban anti-terrorist René González, who pays visit to Portugal, thanked on Thursday Portugal´s solidarity actions that have been taken place in the last decades in favor of Cuba, even when this European country was subjected to a ferocious dictatorship.

In the meeting, held at the Portugal-Cuba Friendship Association, he said “friends are real when they stand by you in harsh times”.

This organization came to life on July 26, 1974, two months after the triumph of the Carnation Revolution. Nonetheless, the links with Cuba started a long time before.

“They have been with us for a long time, and I would say they are pioneers of the future we all need. This world needs to change, and improve”, René stated.

He also talked about the constant and patient work carried out by the Association to voice the case of the Cuban Five unfairly incarcerated in the United States for saving their people from attacks organized by Miami´s terrorist mafia.

René, along with Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González, Ramón Labañino, and Gerardo Hernández, were arrested in the U.S. in September 1998. Irregularities were found in their trials and they were punished with exaggerated sentences.

René, Heroe of the Republic of Cuba, denounced the wall of silence imposed by large media corporations on this injustice and then he added: “thanks to people like you, the truth emerged”.

René and Fernando are already in Cuba after fully serving their sentences. However, Ramón, Gerardo and Antonio are still in prison.

On the other hand, the Association chairman, Augusto Fidalgo, stated that it was a special occasion for the member to welcome the Cuban anti-terrorist, who is accompanied by his wife Olga Salanueva.

“We admire the work, will, and spirit of Cuban people. Having a man with such virtues is an honor to us, impossible to describe in words”, Fidalgo said.

Johana Tablada, Cuban ambassador in the European country, attended the meeting as well as members of the Portugal-Cuba Friendship Association.
