2017 Earthquakes in Cuba, Coincidences, Indications and Certainties
The 5.8 earthquake on last January 17, exactly one year after the beginning of the anomalous series that kept the Cuban Southeast in hold for nine days, marked the beginning of the telluric behavior perceptible in Cuba.
When reviewing what happened during 2017, the technical direction of the National Center for Seismological Research (Cenais) reflects that at that stage the occurrence of tremors was very similar to that of 2016, with 14 perceived by the population.
The most important seismic activity was located in the Pilón-Chivirico sector, specifically south of Uvero, in the coastal and mountainous municipality of Guamá, where this first movement occurred and was perceived in almost the entire eastern region and affected homes in the province of Granma.
The Cuban experts' summary indicates that 10 of the shakes took place in the east of the city and three to the south of Uvero, which confirms this southern strip as the one of greater incidence of that type in the Cuban geography.
The magnitude 4.6 earthquake on July 29 in Varadero, municipality of Cárdenas in the province of Matanzas, evidences the significant seismic situation registered in the central-western region, the seismologists point out.
They rate the occurrence of earthquakes as relatively low during the second semester, both in number and in maximum magnitudes, which could predict a reactivation in the first months of the current year.
