The nomination of Raúl Castro was unanimously supported by 79 delegates, who were elected by the people in their respective constituencies.

Delegates of the government of the municipality of Segundo Frente, in the eastern province of Santiago de Cuba, elected President Raul Castro on Sunday as deputy to the National Assembly of People's Power (Parliament).

The approval was unanimously supported by 79 delegates, who were elected by the people in their respective constituencies and are part of that governing body.

In the extraordinary session of the Municipal Assembly Yurisandi Hechavarría, specialist of the Sierra Cristal Agroforestry Company, was approved as a candidate for deputy.

Likewise, four names were put forth as candidates for delegates to the Provincial Assembly of People's Power.

In the rest of the eight municipalities of Santiago de Cuba, as in the whole island, the delegates to the assemblies of the People's Power met as established in Article 94 of the Electoral Law of that country.

As provided by the Council of State of Cuba, this step is part of the general election process that takes place in the largest of the Antilles.

"At first the candidacy is approved and in a second step it is submitted to vote by the president of the Municipal Assembly for each of the candidates individually," said the head of the National Candidacy Commission, Gisela Duarte.

"To be approved and then be elected by the people they have to have more than 50 percent of the favorable votes of the delegates gathered there," Duarte said.
