Cuban youths will demand today from social networks the return of the territory illegally occupied by the United States in Guantanamo province, where Washington maintains a naval base and a prison internationally denounced as a center of torture.

As announced, a world message action through Twitter is planned since early today in which the labels #ReturnGuantanamotoCubaNow, #USOutofGuantanamo, #EEUUFueradeGuantanamo and #DevuelvanGuantanamoaCubaYa will be used.

An event will be held in the afternoon at the Saúl Delgado Pre-university School, in the Vedado district of Havana, where young people will read a communiqué about the 115th anniversary of the illegal occupation and present a documentary on the issue.

Along with the cessation of the economic, financial and commercial blockade imposed by the United States for more than 55 years, Cuba considers the return of the territory occupied in Guantánamo (southeast) as one of the essential steps for the normalization of relations between the two countries.

For the island, the North American facilities in the referred province are illegal, as well as a violation of its territorial integrity.

The United States took possession of the area in 1903, using the imposition of conditions on Cuba to grant it formal independence after the withdrawal of the Spanish colonial authorities.

After the triumph of the Cuban Revolution in 1959, the island's government repeatedly denounced the illegal occupation by the United States of a portion of territory in Guantánamo.

Reports from several international institutions state that there are some practices such as the exposure of detainees to noise or annoying music, extreme temperatures for prolonged periods, beatings and harassment of many kinds.

Although the previous U.S. administration referred some times to the closure of the Guantánamo prison, those facilities continued to operate.

On January 31, President Donald Trump insisted on his government's determination to keep the jail open. From this it can be inferred that the prison, the base and the territorial occupation in itself will continue as means to maintain the tensions and as thorns that lacerate the Cuban sovereignty.
