British Representative Praises the Current Image of Cayo Santamaria

The head of the Latin American Office and Assistant Director of the America Departmnet of the British Foreign Ministry, Nigel Baker said on Wednesday he was impressed for the recovered image of the keys north of Villa Clara province, which was severely affected by Hurricane Irma.

The British official congratulated Cuba for the recovery process of Cayo Santa Maria while speaking at the inauguration of the International Tourism Fair, FitCuba 2018 underway in that northern key and dedicated this year to the United Kingdom as guest of honor.

He characterized the tourism destination as a peaceful area where one can see the development of hotels in harmony with the environment despite the effects of the hurricane.

On behalf of the UK, he thanked the Cuban Civil Defense and other institutions for protecting five thousand British citizens that were vacationing on the island when the passing of the hurricane and were moved to a safer destination, said Baker.

He said that 205 thousand 727 British vacationers visited Cuba last year positioning the UK as the forth European nation and 6th in the world with the most visitors to the Caribbean nation.

The British official pointed out that they are participating in FitCuba 2018 to reinforce the work of tour operators and business executives and added that during the tourism event they will announce a joint investment of one of their companies with the Cubanacan group.

He expressed that both countries have potential to increase its economic and commercial ties and one of the sectors is pharmaceutical and biotechnology.

With the presence of business executives, tour operators, travel agents and representatives of airlines from 52 countries, FitCuba 2018 constitutes a perfect place to exhibit renovated Cuban recreational products and strengthen ties for a growing industry, key to the country's economy.
