Kuala Lumpur, May 27 (Prensa Latina) Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel congratulated Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad for his recent election, Cuban Ambassador Ibete Fernandez posted on her Facebook account today.

'The president of the Councils of State and of Ministers of Cuba, Miguel Diaz-Canel, sends a congratulatory message to Tun Dr Mahathir bin Mohamad, on the occasion of his election as the prime minister of Malaysia,' the diplomat said.

Mahathir Mohamad was sworn in on May 10 as the prime minister, following his victory in the 14th general election in Malaysia.

His victory broke with more than six decades of uninterrupted government of the United Malays National Organization that forms part of the Barisan Nasional coalition, or National Front.

During the 14th general election held on May 9, the opposition alliance Pakatan Harapan or Pact for Hope, which brought Mahathir Mohamad to power, won 135 of 222 parliamentary seats to form a new Federal Government.

Mahathir was born on July 10, 1925, and when he took office, he became the longest-serving prime minister in the world.

He had already held that post for 22 years (1981-2003), also leading the United Malays National Organization.
