Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel called on today to keep watch and preventive measures to avoid damages due to climatic events, after the heavy rains that hit the west and center of the country.

In a meeting with the authorities of the hit territories, the president insisted on not dismantling the actions carried out in response to the rains of the second half of May -associated with the subtropical storm Alberto- before the start on June 1 of the hurricane season, which runs until November 30.

Diaz-Canel indicated to generalize the experiences derived from the storm that left human and material losses, damages that were particularly severe in the central provinces of Cienfuegos, Villa Clara and Sancti Spiritus, where floods of rivers, overflowed dams and affectations to the electrical service were reported.

The Cuban President also urged to restore services as soon as possible and to overcome the impact of heavy rainfall.

At the meeting, ministers and heads of institutions presented the situation by sectors and heard indications from the head of State.

According to the Public Health Minister Roberto Morales most of the affected medical facilities have already been restored, while the Transport Minister Adel Yzquierdo reported on measures to gradually return that sector to normal.

For his part, the head of the National General Staff of Civil Defense, Major General Ramon Pardo, said that the rains associated with the subtropical storm forced the evacuation of 62,000 people.

Pardo reiterated in the meeting the importance of complying with the measures established at different levels to prevent and face disaster risks.
