UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres today highlighted Cuba''s role in actions to reform the United Nations and in the peace processes in Latin America.

Answering Prensa Latina, the highest representative of the United Nations acknowledged Cuba's positive commitment to the reforms promoted in its mandate and described its participation in this regard as very useful.

He also stressed the important role of the island in the peace process in Colombia, and how it has been very helpful in the talks between the government and the former Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia-People's Army (FARC-EP) and now, with the National Liberation Army.

He also mentioned that there are several areas of cooperation between Cuba and the United Nations.

This could be seen in his recent visit to Havana, in May of this year, on the occasion of the 37th session of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), which Guterres considered as a very effective regional mechanism.

He said he sees ECLAC as a reference and emphasized how it has gained a very solid reputation in the Latin American and Caribbean region.

The governments of the area are very benefited by the work of ECLAC, he said, a mechanism that we also support from the UN.

Another of the Latin American issues mentioned by the UN Secretary General at the press conference held on Thursday at the United Nations headquarters in New York, was the situation in Nicaragua and advocated for an end to violence and called for talks.

Only through political dialogue, there can be a way out of violence, concluded the Secretary General.
