Port Canaveral soon will be home to more cruises headed to Cuba, which has become quite a hit for travelers.

The 968-room Norwegian Sun, one of the port's based ships from Norwegian Cruise Line, is wrapping up its first seasonal trips to Cuba with more planned for the future. The cruise operator, which will set sail on its last Cuba trip this season on Sept. 3, said it welcomes more than 30,000 guests on its 15 voyages — a successful first season.

The ship will relocate to South America for the fall/winter season, but will return to Port Canaveral next April for more Cuba trips.

“Since we first sailed to Cuba in 2017 from Miami, it has become one of our most popular destinations,” said Andy Stuart, president and CEO of Norwegian Cruise Line, in a prepared statement. “Norwegian Sun last homeported in Port Canaveral in the 2011/2012 fall/winter season and we were excited to return and showcase her latest enhancements and offer a new itinerary in the region.”

Port Canaveral CEO John Murray added: “We’re very proud of the success of the Norwegian Sun sailings from Port Canaveral and thrilled that Norwegian Cruise Line has chosen to continue its very popular Cuba itineraries from here."

Visits to Cuba have gained attention as the nation is still mainly a new experience for most travelers. In addition, it has the potential to tap into local markets curious about making visits.
