Venezuelan Training Vessel Simon Bolivar Visits Santiago de Cuba
The Simon Bolivar training vessel, of the Navy of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, began today a visit to this city, and will remain in this port city until September 16.
The brigantine will end here the international journey 'Velas Latinoamericanas', which began in February and included the Atlantic, Pacific and Caribbean nations such as Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Panama, Curacao, Colombia, the Dominican Republic and Mexico. .
The 21-gun salutes of the training vessel were reciprocated with an equal number of shots from La Estrella cove, in the bay and very close to the San Pedro de La Roca Castle, a World Heritage site.
The program of the Venezuelan sailors includes a meeting with governmental authorities of this province and the headquarters of the Revolutionary Navy in the Eastern Army and laying floral wreaths at the Mausoleum built to Jose Marti at Santa Ifigenia Heritage Cemetery.
They will also visit centers of historical and cultural interest in the 7th village established by Spanish colonialism, which recently celebrated its 503rd anniversary.
Built in Vizcaya, Spain, and launched to the sea on November 21, 1979, the vessel brings 210 cadets, 23 officers, 27 sergeants and 31 sailors who thus fulfill a part of their training programs.
