The Permanent Mission of Cuba to the United Nations announced that a letter of protest was sent to the Secretary General of the organization, Antonio Guterres, to request the cancellation of an event promoted by the United States for the beginning of an offensive and misleading campaign against the island.

We then reproduce the text published on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cuba:
The United States Department of State issued a press release on October 12th, which informed the government's intention to use the United Nations Economic and Social Council room (ECOSOC) to hold an event, in which they will launch a campaign called "Jailed for what" against Cuba, on Tuesday October 16th, 2018.

With this action in the ECOSOC chamber, a major organ of the organization, it tries to tarnish the name of the United Nations in an act against a member state, in contravention of the purposes and principles of the Charter.

The very character of the press release distributed by the State Department clearly shows the objectives pursued with this event, announcing the start of an insulting and misleading campaign against Cuba.

The event constitutes a political farce of the worst taste, built on false arguments and with supporting actors, some from Cuban origin, that with dark history at the service of a foreign power add to the escalation of actions against Cuba of the current North American administration, engaged to justify the genocidal policy of economic, commercial and financial blockade against the island.

This policy constitutes the main obstacle to the development of Cuba and a flagrant violation of the human rights of its people. It would be worthwhile for the government of the United States to transform its ignominy campaign for forgiveness of sense and reparation to the Cuban people, for the damage caused by the already 56 years of implementation of the blockade.

Before the events, the Ambassador and permanent representative of Cuba to the United Nations, H.E. Mrs. Anayansi Rodríguez Camejo, has directed a letter of protest, dated October 13th, to the Secretary General of the United Nations, H.E. Mr. Antonio Guterres, and to other senior officials of the Secretariat recalling that the rules on the use of conference rooms clearly state that only events that are in line with the purposes and principles of the United Nations that are justified by their relevance to the work of the organization.

The Ambassador's letter states that the aforementioned event blatantly violates these rules and the Charter of the United Nations, and therefore has the full rejection of Cuba and “requests that the completion of the event planned by the United States be cancelled within the perimeter of the United Nations facilities and conduct an internal investigation in order to determine the responsibilities for the targeted violations.”

Cuba is proud of its human rights record, which denies any manipulation against it. The United States lacks morality to give lessons and much less in this matter. That country, with its limited adherence to international human rights instruments has a pattern of systematic violations of all human rights including the use of torture, arbitrary detention and deprivation of liberty, as is the case of the Guantánamo Naval Base, Cuban territory illegally occupied; the murder of African Americans by the police; the death of innocent civilians by their troops of intervention and occupation; xenophobia and repression, incarceration of immigrants including children who separate from their families.

Cuba condemns and strongly rejects this new Anti-Cuban action by the United States government and hopes that the Secretariat will enforce the established rules, act in line with the UN Charter and consequently cancel the realization of this event at the Organization's facilities.
