Cuba's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, ambassador Ana Silvia Rodriguez, reiterated her country''s support to the Palestinian cause and stated during an open debate of the Security Council the little progress carried out regarding this subject.

The situation continues to deteriorate, with arbitrary decisions such as the withdrawal of the financial support of a State member to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), Rodriguez said Thursday, while lamenting that the Security Council, for the repeated obstruction by one of its members, has not even condemned the escalation of violence and the tragic events that have occurred in the Gaza Strip since March 30.

Cuba reiterates its strong rejection to the use of disproportionate and indiscriminate force by Israel against Palestinian civilians in the occupied territory, including East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip, in gross and flagrant violation of the UN Charter and international law, ambassador Rodriguez stated.

The Cuban ambassador also condemned the illegal construction and expansion of Israeli settlements in the occupied territory and the demolition or seizure of Palestinian institutions.

Cuba demanded the Security Council to comply with its responsibility for maintaining international peace and security.

The Council should demand to Israel an immediate end to the occupation of the Palestinian territories and aggressive policies and colonizing practices, as well as compliance with resolutions on the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question, she stressed.

The Cuban diplomat also reiterated support for a comprehensive, just and lasting solution to the conflict based on the creation of two States, which would allow the Palestinian people to exercise the right to self-determination and have an independent and sovereign State with the previous 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Rodriguez expressed to the Palestinian government and people Cuba's invariable solidarity and support for the entry of Palestine as a member state of the United Nations.

Cuba also demands the total and unconditional withdrawal of Israel from the Syrian Golan Heights and other occupied Arab territories.
