Cuba underlined at the UN the important role of South-South Cooperation as an essential tool for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda

The Deputy Minister of Foreign Trade and Investment of Cuba, Ileana Núñez Mordoche, participated as a panelist in the event organized this Friday by the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation, UNOSSC, on the prospects regional initiatives in this area, which took place within the framework of the Forum of Directors General for Development Cooperation held at the United Nations this November 30.

The Cuban official, also President of the Committee on South-South Cooperation of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), stated that the next United Nations Conference on South-South Cooperation (BAPA + 40) constitutes a great opportunity to highlight the strengths, opportunities and challenges faced by the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean in this area. In this regard, she highlighted the actions carried out in the region to consolidate a common position for the Conference.

She recalled the Interactive Dialogue held on November 29 to identify regional priorities for the Conference, which consolidated the shared views in the field of South-South Cooperation and on the need to consolidate the current institutional mechanisms for a better support for cooperation efforts, including the forums offered by the Regional Economic Commissions.

Núñez Mordoche also referred to the Regional Forum on Sustainable Development held every year, as a mechanism for coordination and follow-up on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda at the regional level and in which participants exchange on South-South Cooperation initiatives, better practices and lessons learned.

She referred to the Sustainable Development Solutions Network as a regional initiative that promotes issues such as the development of capacities, including statistics; institutional strengthening and the implementation at the local level of the global development goals.

The deputy minister took advantage of the occasion to express Cuba's commitment to South-South Cooperation and to the unity of the countries of the South, based on their own strengths and the promotion of an intra-regional approach. (Cubaminrex-Permanent Mission of Cuba to the United Nations)
