Cuba’s National Electoral Commission released the preliminary results of the Referendum for the New Constitution in a press conference.

6,816,169 citizens voted YES and ratified the new Constitution, representing the 73,3% of the total of registered electors, pointed out the National Electoral Commission (CEN).

Alina Balseiro, president of the CEN, highlighted that according to preliminary data, 706,400 citizens chose to vote NO, representing 7,7% of the registered electors.

A total of 7,848,000 —84,4% of registered electors— cast their ballots.

The text confirms the irreversibility of socialism in Cuba as well as the leading role of the Communist Party of Cuba. It also widens individuals’ rights and safeguards, strengthens people’s power in municipalities, promotes foreign investments, accepts several changes in the State structure and recognizes diverse forms of property, both state-owned and private.
