Diaz-Canel: Many in U.S. Should Learn from Cold War Failure

Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel said on Saturday that many in the United States are advocating learning from the failure of the Cold War, alluding to Washington''s escalation of hostility against the island.

On Twitter, the president -who turns 59 this Saturday- also warned that in the northern nation itself the anti-Cuban measures of the current administration, which this week decided to activate the controversial Title III of the Helms-Burton Act, an initiative in force since 1996 to promote regime change in Cuba, are causing concern.

Many in the United States themselves fear that the application of Title III will revert to U.S. finances and acclaim for learning from the failure of the Cold War,' he wrote on Twitter, in which he adds 119,000 followers.

On April 17, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced the activation of the chapter allowing the filing of lawsuits against Cuban and foreign entities outside U.S. jurisdiction, a measure aimed at preventing Cuba's access to foreign investment.

Diaz-Canel rejected the White House's aggressiveness and said the island will not surrender. 'Cubans do not surrender, nor do we accept laws about our destinies that are outside the Constitution. In Cuba, we Cubans rule.

Cuba trusts in its forces and in our dignity,' he stressed. The decision of President Donald Trump's administration caused unrest and unleashed criticism among the international community, including Washington allies such as the European Union and Canada.
