The state of Quintana Roo has signed an agreement with Cuba to offer multi-destination tourism packages.

The newly signed deal was announced by Darío Flota Ocampo, director of the Tourism Promotion Council of Quintana Roo who explained that they were invited to Feria Internacional de Cuba, which concludes May 11, to discuss becoming a multi-destination attraction for European travelers.

“We were invited to this event by the tourism office of Cuba. We talked about the need to take advantage of the long stays of visitors so they can learn about both places, taking advantage of our proximity and creating a coordinated effort in tourism between Quintana Roo and Cuba,” he said.

Flota Ocampo says the agreement between the state and Cuba is about having travelers know Cancun and Tulum as well as Chichen Itza, adding that tourists arriving in the Mexican Caribbean will be transferred to Havana.

The director of tourism pointed out that the concept of the mulit-destination attraction would resume this year after a long pause. He says they will work with Cuban tour operators as well as Cubana de Aviación, taking advantage of the celebrations for the 500 years of Havana.

Flota Ocampo added that they have been working on the concept for three years and hope to move it forward through airlines or cruises.

“Once the fair ends, we will meet to agree on the date of arrival of visitors from Cuba to Cancun and thereby increase tourism from Europe,” he said.
