Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez advocated on Monday for defending peace and sovereignty of the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean ''ahead of having invoked the aggressive and dangerous Monroe Doctrine''.

'Let's preserve the postulates of the Proclamation of Latin America as a Zone of Peace in front of US desire to exercise domination in the region', Rodriguez tweeted.

Monroe's Doctrine is a foreign policy strategy promoted by the United States under the presidency of James Monroe (1817-1825) that deems the Latin American continent is under US control.

Its validity of 'America for the Americans' -including Latin America in North America, demonstrates the interference of Washington, to counteract this doctrine, leaders of the region proclaimed it in 2014 as a Zone of Peace.

This took place during the II Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States in Havana where they agreed to banish forever the use and threat of force in the region.

They also announced their restraint from using force to resolve disputes with their neighbors.
