The first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, Raul Castro, attended this Wednesday the reopening of the Statue of the Republic, located in the Capitol of Havana, seat of the national parliament.

The ceremony was also attended by the president of the National Assembly of People's Power (parliament), Esteban Lazo, among other leaders.

The Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Serguei Lavrov, who is making an official visit to the Caribbean island until Thursday, was also present at the event.

Sculpted in bronze, the Statue of the Republic has a total height of 17.54 meters, making it the third largest under roof in the world.

The reopening takes place after specialists worked on the 49-ton image to restore the splendor of its beginnings as part of the Capitol restoration process.
