Ines Maria Chapman, a vice president of the Councils of State and Ministers of Cuba, ended a brief visit to Zimbabwe, where she arrived on Friday to represent her country at the funeral of former President Robert Mugabe.

The Cuban leader attended the ceremony organized at the Harare National Stadium on Saturday to pay her last respects to the Zimbabwean independence icon, considered the country's founding father, who passed away on September 6 in Singapore, where he had been hospitalized.

The vice president's activities concluded Saturday evening with a meeting with President Emmerson Mnangagwa, during which both leaders exchanged on the solid bilateral relations, mutual cooperation, Cuba's support to the struggle for the independence of Zimbabwe, and this African nation's call for an end to the US blockade of the island.

The head of State and Government of Zimbabwe thanked Cuba for having sent a high-level representative to the funeral ceremony and stressed that the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, and former President Mugabe were brothers.

Mnangagwa also recalled that thousands of Zimbabwean professionals have been trained in Cuban universities and insisted on the friendship between both peoples and governments, and the intention to continue strengthening those ties.

Upon being received by the president, Chapman conveyed the condolences of Army General Raul Castro, first secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba, and President Miguel Diaz-Canel, on the death of the former Zimbabwean president, according to official sources.
