Cuban president highlights opening of Alzheimer center

The president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, highlighted the opening of a center for the care of patients with Alzheimer's disease, a work he described as humane.

Another humane and valuable health work to raise patients' quality of life, the head of state wrote in Twitter.

On Saturday, Vice President Roberto Morales and the Minister of Public Health of Cuba, José Ángel Portal, opened the Center for Alzheimer's and other cognitive disorders, the only one of its kind in the island.

Located in the Cuban capital, it is an institution equipped to make an early diagnosis of the disease, train caregivers and family members, and promote research in order to improve patient care.

According to official data, Alzheimer's will affect 131.5 million people worldwide in 2050.

Reports issued by the World Health Organization indicate that in the region of the Americas more than 10 million people live with dementia, a figure that increases every three seconds.
