Exports on spotlight for tobacco production in central Cuba
Sancti Spiritus, Cuba, Nov 24 (Prensa Latina) Increasing tobacco production to respond to the demand from the Cuban economy and thereby increasing exports of that item is the objective of the ongoing harvest in this central province.
During the 2019-2020 tobacco harvest, after an initial plan of 3,755 tons of tobacco, Sancti Spiritus committed to producing some 4,128 tons next year.
Osmel Perez, director of Empresa de Acopio y Beneficio de Tabaco, told reporters that conditions exist to speed up sowing this month, as the program promoted in seedbeds guarantees the seedlings to the producers.
Sancti Spiritus, which is Cuba's second major tobacco producer, is expected to supply more than 300 tons of covered tobacco for cigar layers.
According to statistics provided by local agricultural authorities, many varieties that are resistant to pests and have high productivity were sowed in previous harvests.
