Cuban President summoned to dialogue for peace in Latin America

The president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, today called the attendees of the 17th ALBA-TCP Summit to talk to continue advancing in the proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace, adopted in 2014.

When inaugurating in Havana the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America-Peoples' Trade Agreement (ALBA-TCP) summit meeting, Díaz-Canel called to defend peace, independence and cooperation in the context of the regional mechanism.

He stressed that it is necessary to discuss and assess together to take advantage of the capacity and strength of the ALBA-TCP, founded on December 14, 2004 by the leaders of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, and Bolivarian, Hugo Chávez.

The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, also attended the meeting; Prime Minister of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Ralph Gonsalves; and other high political representatives, who will also celebrate the 15th anniversary of the forum.

The meeting will discuss the role of ALBA-TCP in the current regional situation marked by the coup d'etat in Bolivia against President Evo Morales, popular anti-neoliberal mobilizations in Chile and Colombia, and the increase in US hostility against Cuba.

Solidarity, complementation, justice and cooperation are the principles defended by ALBA-TCP, emerged as an alternative to the hegemony of capital that threatened to expand throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.

The instance promotes since its creation an equitable trade between peoples, in opposition to neoliberal formulas.
