With the elections of governors and deputy governors, Cuba improves its democracy without pressure, religious man and lawmaker Orlando Gutierrez said on Saturday.

'We see this as another step towards strengthening our democracy in the work of the People's Power, which we created and we have to improve without pressure,' Gutierrez told Prensa Latina.

The most important thing is that it shows that this (he points at the Constitution of the Republic in his hand) is not a dead letter, he added after casting his vote in Plaza de la Revolucion municipality in Havana.

The fact that the municipal delegates have voted to elect the governor is sui generis of our democracy, he added.

'I represent more than 2,000 voters as a delegate of my constituent, and we are the only ones who can elect the governor,' Gutierrez stated.

Asked about whether the way to choose the provincial authorities is a way to distance from the people's interests, Gutierrez said that that possibility does not exist.

The President of the Republic makes his proposals, but we have to choose, because if the candidate does not win 50% plus one of the votes from the grassroots delegates, he is not elected governor, as established in the Electoral Act and our Constitution, he stressed.

On referring to the future, the municipal delegate mentioned two of the country's biggest problems in his opinion: in the first place, the blockade, which is real; in the second place, subversion, which tries to break constitutional order.

For his part, municipal delegate Fidel Ernesto Hernandez noted that the elections of governors will allow improving the work of the government structures.

With our system, there is no uncoupling between the people and the government, and we have to make that commitment bigger, he explained.
