Spanish FM Reiterates European Union's Opposition to U.S. Blockade of Cuba

Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo, who paid an official visit to Cuba, reiterated on Tuesday in this capital the European Union's disagreement with the economic, financial and commercial blockade imposed by the United States on the Caribbean island.

During his stay in Havana, which ended on Tuesday, Garcia-Margallo held exchanges with Cuban authorities of various spheres, and received details on the damages caused by that arbitrary measure to the Cuban people and the economy.

In statements to the press, Garcia-Margallo asserted that his visit took place in line with the normality of relations between the two countries and described it as favorable to assess aspects of vital common interest, like economic cooperation and support for the struggle against the Ebola fever virus.

The praised the current role played by Cuba in the struggle against that scourge, adding that Cuban physicians have carried out a praise worthy work in that struggle.

With respect to social and consular issues dealt with the Cuban government, he referred to the so-called Law of Historic Memory, which allows grandchildren of Spaniards to obtain the Spanish citizenship if they wish to do so.

On the next Iberian-American Summit, to be held in December in Veracruz, Mexico, the Spanish FM said that Cuba has a key place, for its role in the region.
