Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) and first Vice-President of the Councils of State and of Ministers checked out Wednesday in Camaguey the efforts made by sectors which are key for the socioeconomic development of this Cuban province.

During his visit to the University of Camaguey (UC), Díaz-Canel Bermúdez took great interest in how higher education centers are merging together in this province. Based on this, three institutions: the afore-mentioned university, the Jose Marti Pedagogical University and the provincial branch of the Manuel Piti Fajardo Physical Culture and Sports University merged together to form a single higher education center.

Díaz-Canel called this move and the link between the higher education institution (HEI) with entities and agencies of the State a crucial step for the local development programmes, which are instrumental to consolidate the updating process of Cuba’s socioeconomic model.

The University of Camaguey, which was the first HEI built by the Revolutionary government, features nowadays 10 faculties, 12 municipality-based venues, a group of courses that has been accredited and an enrollment of over 6,000 students.

The first Vice-President of Cuba visited the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, where he was given a broad information on the production of a therapeutic vaccine against prostate cancer and on other compounds used in the farming area.

His tour also included the Vicentina de la Torre Art Academy, where Díaz-Canel Bermúdez was learnt about how the youth get trained in disciplines such as classic ballet, visual arts and music, in both elementary and secondary education.

In another moment of his visit, the leader praised the potentialities of Camaguey province to boost local economy, and in this regard he urged everyone to work harder in order to strengthen the productive sector and the social infrastructure.

Along with Díaz-Canel Bermúdez were Jorge Luis Tapia Fonseca, first secretary of the PCC in Camagüey, and deputy Isabel González Cárdenas, head of the Provincial Assembly of People's Power.
