Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida will visit Cuba from April 30 to May 3, which will be the first visit ever by a foreign minister of the Asian country to the Caribbean island, reported CubaDebate.

“It’s a very important moment in which Cuba is trying to modernize both economically and socially and our government wants to support this process. That’s the message we want to convey,” Yasushi Takase, director for Latin America and Caribbean Foreign Ministry in Japan, told EFE.

Kishida will meet with his Cuban counterpart Bruno Rodriguez, who will address issues such as reform of the Security Council of the UN and the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Cuba has diplomatic relations with Japan since 1929.
