Cuba calls to strengthen academic cooperation between EU and CELAC

Cuba called on Monday to strengthen cooperation between universities in the countries of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC by its Spanish acronym) and the European Union (EU) during the II Academic Summit held by both regional blocs in Brussels, the Belgian capital.

Santiago Lage Choy, rector of the University of Camagüey (central-eastern province of Cuba), defended the importance of transcending from theory to practice and materializing more cooperation projects in areas of common interest.

On the other hand, the rector of the Agrarian University of Havana, Maria Irene Balbin, referred to the possibility of this meeting to promote cooperation in areas such as professional training, research and technological innovation.

This second Summit, which concludes tomorrow, brings together academics from both regions, as well as members of international organizations such as UNESCO and the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (CEPAL by its Spanish acronym). The commitments of the meeting will be presented to the Heads of State or Government during the bi-regional summit that begins on Wednesday.
