The President of Venezuela’s Assembly, Diosdado Cabello has shared a rare photograph of the iconic Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro, while meeting him in Cuba.

Sharing a photo of the meeting via Twitter on Sunday, Cabello stressed the importance of “the years of struggle and dignity of people with their leaders at the forefront” and conveying greetings sent by the Cuban leader to Venezuela.

Cabello also met with Cuban President Raul Castro to discuss bilateral relations expressing satisfaction with “their continued development.”

“Dear compatriots, I went to the beautiful Cuba yesterday, I had the honor to meet with Fidel and Raul, revolutionaries who by their example inspire us,” he said.

Fidel, though 89, is active on Twitter and writes a newspaper column. He has rarely made public appearances since his health deteriorated and he delegated powers to his brother Raul in 2006. He formally stepped down as president in 2008.

His previous 14-month absence from the public fueled rumors of his death until March, when he was seen meeting a Venezuelan delegation in Cuba.

Fidel Castro was a close friend of the former Venezuelan president, Hugo Chavez and the pair established a warm relationship between the two countries.
