Peter Maurer, president of the International Committee of the Red Cross will arrive today in Cuba in a working visit. During his stay, the distinguished visitor will hold meetings with Cuban top officials in the government and will develop other activities, according to the official paper Granma.

Peter Maurer was born in Thun, Switzerland, in 1956. He majored in History and International Law in Bern. Then, he earned a doctorate.

He entered the Swiss diplomat service in 1987 where he worked in important jobs. He was named Ambassador and head of the Human Security Division at the Directorate of Foreign Affairs in the Swiss Chancellery.

He was then named Ambassador and Head of the Permanent Mission of Switzerland to the United Nations in 2004. He worked hard to integrate Switzerland —recently member of the UN by then— in the multilateral networks. He held key responsibilities at the UN.

In 2010, he is named Swiss State Secretary for Foreign Affairs. And in 2012, Peter Maurer became Director of the International Committee of the Red Cross.
