South African members of the Movement of Solidarity with Cuba will today travel to the Caribbean island to join other international volunteer work brigades linked to the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP).

The Cuban ambassador to South Africa, Carlos Fernandez de Cossio, met with a representation of the brigade before they left. He spoke of his people's gratitude for their solidarity and support.

The diplomat also updated the brigade on issues of national interest, particularly the recent visit of U.S. President, Barack Obama, to the island.

Fernandez de Cossio reiterated the need to continue fighting tirelessly against the blockade which has been imposed for more than 50 years on the Caribbean island by successive U.S. administrations, both Democrat and Republican.

He stated that there were also other issues that needed to be resolved before the normalization of relations between Cuba and the United States is finally achieved. Among them is the removal of the American naval base in Cuban territory occupied against the will of the people.

In addition, he called for a stop to the stimulation and support of internal subversion in Cuba.

Participants in the ICAP brigade will join other South African social groups and will depart on April 27th. Together they comprise the South African delegation who will participate in the May Day (International Workers' Day) celebrations in Cuba.
