Strengthening association activities and integration among Latin American beekeepers and a look to global trends and changes, are the objectives of the Congress of that specialty starting here today, according to a source of the sector. In exclusive statements to Prensa Latina, the president of the Latin American Federation of Beekeepers (FILAPI), Misael Cuevas Bravo, also stated that the extractive models of raw materials for export create monoculture and reduce opportunities for the development of beekeeping, after having a negative impact on environment.

Agribusiness, a system of production that includes technological packages with chemical products conspires against the health of bees and food production, Cuevas Bravo also said. He presides over the opening ceremony of the 12th Latin American Congress of Apiculture at the Conference Center in Havana.

This event will be held until Thursday, July 21, in the presence of delegates from more than 20 countries, among them Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Cuba, Mexico, Peru, Spain, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Colombia, United Kingdom, Guatemala and the United States.

The FILAPI president considered that climate change has generated more droughts, rains and hurricanes that impact the honey production and makes bees more vulnerable.

Parallel with this event will be the 4th Cuban Congress of Apiculture at the Conference Center.

Both congresses bring together more than 350 experts and producers, who will discuss about 200 papers.

The program includes an exhibition of beekeeping products.
