Another school year begins today in Cuba with the increase of teaching quality and the strengthening of ties and the school-family cooperation, as key priorities for improving the training of students.
This was stated in recent statements by Cuban Education Minister, Ena Elsa Velazquez. She also mentioned as a priority the work to cover the shortage of teachers in some provinces.

The minister talked of the importance of increasing graduations, because that is a key solution to the problem.

However, she noted that there are some alternative strategies such as the use of teachers in training phase and the contract of assistant professors.

Velazquez said that the necessary conditions for the beginning of classes are prepared throughout the country.

The country has been carrying out an extensive program of repairs of schools, training of teachers and assurance of school materials, furniture and other resources, she said.

This led that more than 10,590 schools from the Ministry of Education (MINED) are opening their doors today, to receive almost more than 1,760,000 students for the 2016-2017 school year.

Regarding Higher Education, whose academic-teaching institutions also begin their school year today, Minister Jose Ramon Saborido stated that about 87,849 registrations were granted in the three modalities of university studies (daily regular course, for extended education and distance learning), representing an increase compared with the previous year.
