The World Food Program (WFP) in coordination with the Cuban government will offer assistance to the victims of Hurricane Matthew in the eastern region of the country, the international body reported today.

The WFP states that they, in mutual agreement with Cuban authorities, will begin the delivery of food to cover the needs of 180,000 people affected by the havoc of the powerful weather event in the eastern province of Guantanamo.

'We are working closely with the authorities to support the Cuban populations affected by this disaster,' WFP representative in Havana, Laura Melo, says in the statement.

In her report, Melo said that WFP will support the victims for six months.

For the initial phase, the food stocks WFP-Cuba has provided to support the government's response in disaster situations will be used. This will allow to the most affected population in Baracoa, Maisi, Imias and San Antonio del Sur to be helped.

The aid will subsequently be extended to vulnerable groups -children between six months and three years of age, pregnant women and adults over 65 years, in the municipalities of Caimanera, Manuel Tames, Yateras and Moa, the latter in Holguin province, the document said.

As part of the WFP operation, a compound fortified cereal corn and soybean for pregnant women, and micronutrient powders for children between 12 and 23 months to increase the nutritional value of their daily diet, are also expected to be delivered.
