The Council of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) today paid tribute with a minute of silence to the memory of the Cuban Revolution''s historic leader, Fidel Castro.

The tribute, paid at the opening of the 155th regular meeting of the executive body of FAO's top management body, was a proposal of the Group of Latin American and Caribbean Countries (Grulac).

The text presented to argue the gesture of remembrance highlights the intention to evoke the memory of a man who made history.

Without doubt - it adds - Fidel Castro was the builder of revolutionary Cuba, but, moreover, one of the emblematic figures of the second half of the twentieth century. Since then, the Republic of Cuba and the Cuban people have set an example of dignity and perseverance.

The FAO Council meeting will meet for four days with an agency that includes the evaluation of the UNFCCC's strategic framework and plan for the period 2018-201.

The meeting will also address, among other issues, the programmatic and budgetary aspects raised in the Committees on Agriculture, Commodity Problems, Fisheries, Forestry and World Food Security, held between July and October last.
