Renowned Mexican folk singer, Lila Downs, has expressed today her support to a message sent by the National Association of Cuban Writers and Artists (UNEAC) and denounced the recent change of policy of the United States government towards this Caribbean country.

One Grammy and four Latin Grammy awards have distinguished the work of this artist, whose artistic creativities has highlighted the Mexican roots and that of indigenous peoples, in addition to the regional music of her native Oaxaca.

Downs gave a spectacular concert at Teatro Nacional de Cuba during the Festival of Popular Voices held in 2013.

The singer, composer, producer and anthropologist joined to more than 2,000 people from 45 countries that support the proclamation of UNEAC, aimed at denouncing the unusual change of policy issued on June 16 by U.S. President, Donald Trump.

In the message, the organization described the president's speech as antiquated, obsolete, loaded with falsehoods and stereotypes, and with words particularly directed to an audience who does not represent the majority of Cuban emigration.

We hope to continue working together to build a fruitful relationship in the cultural field and on the basis of equality, favoring the mutual spiritual enrichment of both nations, UNEAC proclamation states.
