Prestigious Cuban Filmmaker Miguel Torres Dies

Cuban prestigious filmmaker Miguel Torres died of cancer Thursday at age 76 in this capital.

Torres' large film making curriculum covers his work as a director of documentary films, feature films and as a professor and movie critic. Torres was the director of Cuba's Noticiero Icaic Latinoamericano (Latin American Icaic News Report) that is considered a jewel of the national cinematograhy, and included in the United Nations Education, Science and Culture Organization (UNESCO) Memory of the World Register since 2009.

UNESCO gave Torres a scholarship in the 1960's to study special cinematography courses in France and Italy.

His most emblematic works include 'Introduction to Chile' (1972), about the first months of the government of Salvador Allende; The Malagones (1981); 'A Journal of Hope' (I and II), written and filmed in 1986, and 'Che' (1998), about the return of the remains of Ernesto Che Guevara to Cuba.

His last work was El Otro Lezama. Cronica (The Other Lezama. Chronicle, 2012) and at the time of his death he was director of the Octavio Cortazar Productions for documentary films, of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC).

The Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR) granted Miguel Torres an imitation of the glorious machete of General Maximo Gomez. Among other honors, the late film maker was conferred the Award for the Cuban National Culture.
