The Colombian-Argentinean film ''Matar a Jesus'', by filmmaker Laura Mora, was granted today the 2017 Glauber Rocha Award, given by the foreign press at the 39th International Festival of New Latin American Cinema.

The award is organized by the Prensa Latina news agency and regarding this film the jury highlighted the original and moving way of dealing with the conflicts triggered by the violence and the traumas that it can cause in its victims, from a social, psychological and humanistic approach.

The jury also praised the excellent direction, production, photography and the outstanding performances of Natasha Jaramillo and Giovanny Rodriguez, as well as the shots selected to lead the viewers through the risky, outlying and beautiful areas of the city of Medellin during the film.

The film, based on the life of its director, is about the story of Paula (starred by Jaramillo) who witnesses the killing of her father in Medellin and decides to take justice into her own hands given the little attention received from authorities.

The jury of the 2017 Glauber Rocha Award was chaired by Martha Sanchez (Prensa Latina) and Alain Valdes (journal Orbe) and was made up of correspondents Francisco Forteza (ANSA), Reny Martinez (Danzahoy magazine), Yanisbel Peña (Havana Reporter) and Yaimi Ravelo (Resumen Latinoamericano).

The jury also decided to grant a mention to the film 'O filme da minha vida' by Brazilian filmmaker Selton Melo, for its outstanding production and style that echoes the Cinema Nôvo, as it takes up the cinematographic language that has been lost in the Brazilian film industry.

The 2017 Glauber Rocha Award was created in 1985 to encourage the movement of the new Latin American cinema, which emerged with unique force in the 1960s, and is granted to fiction feature films that expresses, with artistic rigor and authenticity, the social reality of Latin America.

The award is dedicated to the figure of Brazilian filmmaker Glauber Rocha and was granted for the first time in 1985 to Argentinean Fernando Birri for his lifework.

Since 1985 the award has been given every year to films such as 'La hora de la estrella', by Suzana Amaral (Brazil), 'La boca del lobo', by Francisco Lombardi (Peru), 'Amores perros', by Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu (Mexico), 'Una casa con vista al mar', by Alberto Arvelo (Venezuela) and 'Relatos Salvajes', by Damian Szifron (Argentina), amid others.
