With a march to the Pantheon of the Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces, where the remains of Nicolas Guillen are buried, the week to pay tribute to the national poet conclude on Tuesday, 30 years after his death.

Important scholars of Guillen's work paid tribute to him during one week with a wide program of activities, which included book launchings, poetry readings, plastic arts exhibitions and academic panels.

The program also included the official opening of the bronze statue sculpted by Enrique Angulo, located at the Alameda de Paula (Paula boulevard) in Havana.

A new edition of the book 'Songoro Cosongo,' published in 1931, along with other titles from the Palma Sola collection, such as 'La paloma de vuelo popular' (The Dove of Popular Flight), published for the first time in Buenos Aires in 1958, were launched.

Both texts are central pieces of Guillen's work. The first book devoted him as defender of 'poesia mulata' (mulatto poetry) from the redo of rhythms, lexicon and the expressive forms of speech, while the second one depicts a decade of exile in 39 highly social and popular texts.

The celebration for the 30th anniversary of his death, hosted by the Foundation that bears the name of this outstanding intellectual, was supported by the Ministry of Culture, the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC), the Cuban Book Institute and the Dulce Maria Loynaz Center.

Nicolas Guillen Foundation was born in 1991 with the auspices of UNEAC. It aims to preserve, study and disseminate the literary work of the Cuban poet through keynote speeches, courses, symposia, festivals, exhibitions and shows.
