The singer also won the best urban performance and best urban song prizes.

Uruguayan singer Jorge Drexler won record of the year for Universos Paralelos, a Colombian-inspired song.

The ceremony paid tribute to the late Spanish flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucia, who won album of the year for Cancion Andaluza.

The renowned musician died of a heart attack in February aged 66.

Iglesias, son of acclaimed singer Julio Iglesias, accepted his first Latin Grammy in more than a decade via satellite from Paris, where he is currently on tour.

The ceremony, held in Las Vegas, came with an unexpected political undertone as US President Barack Obama delivered a national address on immigration just as the ceremony was set to begin.

The US president announced plans to protect some five million undocumented migrants from deportation, a core issue for Hispanic-Americans.

Marc Antony, former husband to Jennifer Lopez, paid a nod to Mr Obama as he voiced surprise at winning the Latin Grammy for best salsa album.

"Long live the Latin race!" he said as he accepted the prize for his album 3.0.

Colombian singer Carlos Vives, who won two awards, concluded his acceptance speech for best contemporary tropical album, Mas + Corazon Profundo, by dedicating the award to Mr Obama.

The 15th Latin Grammys also featured a host of performances from artists including Ricky Martin, Chris Brown, Pitbull and Carlos Santana.
