But she has achieved yet another, this week - by becoming the first artist to attract 1 billion YouTube views within three months.

The streaming service announced Thursday that her music video for Hello greeted its 1 billionth view in 87 days, breaking the 158-day record held by Psy's Gangnam Style.

The black and white clip joins sixteen other videos which have also reached 1 billion views.

They include Maroon 5's Sugar, Major Lazer's Lean On, OneRepublic's Counting Stars, LMFAO's Party Rock and Sia's Chandelier.

There are several other music videos on the cusp of reaching 1 billion views, including Shakira's Waka Waka, Ed Sheeran's Thinking Out Loud and Ellie Goulding's Love Me Like You Do.

'If anyone deserves it, it's Adele and that song,' said Susanne Daniels, the head of original programming at YouTube.

YouTube said the feat is still rare, but newer music videos such as Katy Perry's Roar and Taylor Swift's Blank Space achieved it at a faster pace than older ones like Justin Bieber's Baby and Eminem's Love The Way You Lie.

Hello spent its first 10 weeks at No. 1 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart.

The news comes just weeks after Adele's third album, 25, smashed global records with its chart success - beating the Fifa 16 computer game to become the UK's biggest-selling home entertainment title of 2015.

The singer, 27, who returned to the scene in November after a four-year hiatus, sold 2,604,850 copies, compared to 2,516,079 for Fifa 16, according to The Independent.

Despite the fact that the album was only released at the end of the year, Adele managed to smash all previous records, whilst helping to drive a four per cent increase in UK music sales, according to the newspaper.

However, the star failed to make the list of top ten most-streamed artists - headed by Ed Sheeran - after refusing to allow 25 to feature on platforms where people could listen to the songs for free.

Streams through services such as Spotify and Apple Music have been counted in the Official Albums Chart since March, with 100 streams equating to one purchase.

The album sold 800,307 copies in its opening week and, by the 29th day, the Someone Like You hitmaker had become the fastest artist ever to smash through the two million sales mark at that rate.

The singer did, however, fail to reach the top of the list of the biggest songs of 2015, taking sixth place with Hello, the album's debut single.

Nevertheless, the hit comeback single has been named as the fastest seller of the year.

In second and third place in the list of the biggest albums of 2015 were Ed Sheeran's x and Sam Smith's In The Lonely Hour - despite both albums being released in 2014.
