Brad Pitt to miss film premiere after split from Angelina Jolie

Brad Pitt is to miss a premiere of his latest film to focus on his "family situation", he has said.

The actor has been the focus of press attention since it was revealed that Angelina Jolie has applied for divorce.

He narrated director Terrence Malick's epic documentary Voyage of Time, about the birth of the Universe.

He said he did not want his presence at the California Science Centre Imax Theatre in Los Angeles on Wednesday to "distract attention" from the film.

'Fascinating and educational'

In a statement, Pitt said: "Terrence's Voyage of Time is an incredibly beautiful and unique experiential Imax film for children and families chronicling the birth of time.

"I'm very grateful to be part of such a fascinating and educational project, but I'm currently focused on my family situation and don't want to distract attention away from this extraordinary film, which I encourage everyone to see."

Cate Blanchett has narrated a different feature-length version of the film. Pitt, 52, previously appeared in Malick's 2011 film Tree of Life.

Jolie, 41, has filed for divorce citing irreconcilable differences and asked for physical custody of their six children.

The couple married in 2014 after 10 years together. Jolie's lawyer Robert Offer said the actress had filed for the dissolution of the marriage "for the health of the family".

Brad Pitt: FBI considers investigation over plane claim

The FBI says it is gathering information about an alleged incident involving Brad Pitt and his children aboard a private flight last week.

It said it was evaluating whether to launch an investigation.

Pitt's wife Angelina Jolie filed for divorce on Monday citing irreconcilable differences.

Jolie has asked for physical custody of the couple's six children, asking the judge to give Pitt visitation rights.

The FBI told the BBC: "In response to your inquiry regarding allegations within the special aircraft jurisdiction of the United States; specifically, an aircraft carrying Mr Brad Pitt and his children, the FBI is continuing to gather facts and will evaluate whether an investigation at the federal level will be pursued."

Pitt released a statement to People magazine after Jolie filed for divorce, saying he was "saddened", and adding: "What matters most now is the well-being of our kids. I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time."   Jolie had filed for the dissolution of their marriage / AP

Jolie's lawyer, Robert Offer, said the decision to divorce had been made "for the health of the family".

Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services said it could not confirm or deny whether it was investigating Pitt because of confidentiality laws.

Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has said it is not investigating actor Brad Pitt in connection with reports of allegations regarding his children, following claims they were looking into the matter.

They told the BBC: "The LAPD is not handling any report or allegations into child abuse for Mr Brad Pitt."

Pitt and Jolie wedding announced

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are now married, according to a spokesman for the Hollywood couple.

Pitt, 50, and Jolie, 39, tied the knot in France on Saturday, ending years of speculation over when and where they would finally walk down the aisle.

The actors were wed in a small chapel in Chateau Miraval in a private, nondenominational, civil ceremony attended by family and friends.

The couple's children took part in the wedding, the Associated Press reports.

Jolie walked along the aisle with her eldest sons Maddox and Pax, 13 and 10 respectively, while her daughters Zahara, nine, and Vivienne, six, threw petals.

Eight-year-old Shiloh and six-year-old Knox served as ring bearers, according to the couple's spokesman.

The couple obtained a marriage licence beforehand from a California judge who travelled to France to conduct the ceremony.

Chateau Miraval in Correns, a village in the southern French region of Var, has been their second home since 2008.

Pitt was previously married to Friends star Jennifer Aniston, while Jolie was previously married to actors Jonny Lee Miller and Billy Bob Thornton.

The couple, whose relationship began after they starred together in the 2005 film Mr and Mrs Smith, have been engaged since April 2012.

According to the Times of Malta, the pair are currently in Malta to shoot By the Sea, their first film together since Mr and Mrs Smith.

Jolie has also written the script and will direct what she has described as "a very experimental, independent-type film where we get to be actors".
