With the screening of the video ''Forests and Education'', FAO is celebrating on Thursday the International Day of Forests 2019, at the United Nations headquarters in Rome.

Hiroto Mitsugi, Assistant Director-General of the Forestry Department, delivered the welcoming remarks calling on the need to preserve forests and Daniel Gustafson, Deputy Director-General of FAO, delivered the opening speech, both are members of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

Ecology techniques in the school yard to achieve greater awareness in children; promote awareness and understanding in today's children and young people and lessons learned from the Children for Forests initiative, will be the issues several experts will address during the meeting, which will be debated led by Mitsugi.

A new global platform on forestry education will be also presented by Matthias Schwoerer, Head of Division, European and International Forestry Policy at the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture in Germany.

As part of the event program, the winner of the video contest for educators of the International Day of Forests will be presented. The contest was to demonstrate how the fundamentals to better understand the importance of forests and trees for the future of the planet can be passed on to children and young people.

The International Day of Forests is celebrated every March 21 since 2013 by Agreement of the UN General Assembly.
