Koide receives this recognition after the death of Japanese Sakari Momoi in July, who was a month older than him.

Koide, resident of Nagoya city (central Japan), was born on March 13, 1903, the same year the Wright brothers undertook their first manned flight and Tour de France, the famous bicycle tour, made its debut.

During his youth, the world’s oldest man worked as a tailor at a men’s store in Fukui’s Tsuruga locality, according to Guinness World Records.

Koide now spends his days shuffling between his home and a day care center in Nagoya, where he moved at the age of 107 to be closer to his daughter.

Despite his age, he still walks unassisted in his house, although otherwise he uses a wheelchair; he uses his own teeth, and not dentures, to eat and can read without glasses, the organization said in a statement.

Another Japanese, Misao Okawa, held the title of world’s oldest woman until she passed away in April, a month after her 117th birthday.

The record is now held by Susannah Mushatt Jones, 116, from Brooklyn, New York.

Japan, after Monaco, has the world’s highest life expectancy, 80.5 years for men and 86.83 for women, according to latest data.
