Katherine Muller, Director of the Regional Office of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), has praised Cuba's advances in biotechnology. She added that it was not by chance that the Caribbean state was chosen as venue of an international workshop on applied nuclear physics for biomedicine.

The event, which is holding sessions here in Havana, gathers together world-class scientists from 15 countries.

The UNESCO official pointed to the significance of this type of events to encourage and promote scientific exchanges towards achieving common goals and objectives.

During Tuesday's session, delegates debated biomedical physics, its economic and social impact, and its effects on the health processes.
